"Shenandoah Valley, History & Culture #3: Sacred Harp Rapture" Order ID = HandC3a_CopyrightKilmer © 2014 Miriam A. Kilmer |
Sacred Harp singing is best known for its intense volume, edgy harmony, and boisterous enthusiasm. Searching for several images that would complement each other, all from the Shenandoah Valley, I made dozens of changes in the configuration of the montage. Part of the challenge was that I needed to find images of singers who had already given me permission to publish pictures of them, so that I wouldn't have to ask them and wait for a response. Finally I noticed that all four images convey another side of Sacred Harp: quiet rapture. All are from the Annual All-Day Singing of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Sacred Harp Singers, 2012. There is more information on shapenote singing and The Sacred Harp at the end of this document. |
