58. One spring in Basye, I remarked to my mother that although the redbuds (cercis canadensis) were in full bloom, the dogwoods (cornus florida) had not begun to blossom. My mother, who generally knew a lot more than I did about plants, replied: "Oh! Redbuds and dogwoods never bloom at the same time." I have delighted ever since in taking photographs of dogwoods and redbuds blooming together, and I tell the story far more often than I should. I like to think that my mother, wherever she is, chuckles along with me.
