46. I like the way the bold orange color of the American painted lady butterfly flouts the pink and blue theme of this montage. The sharp angles of the two central images and the upside-down pose of the feasting butterfly also add interest and edge to the overall effect. I was taught to strive for balance in my compositions, following the rules of ancient Greek artists, but sometimes it's more fun to go for the suspense of a slightly off-balance arrangement.
 
Location: All five images come from the central Shenandoah Valley, near Basye, Mt. Jackson, and Harrisonburg.
