"Under the Alder Tree" (Sadie in the Garden) Frederick Carl Frieseke c. 1918 36" x 29" Prints available Order ID = 3A013 Frieseke is best known for his impressionist oils of women in gardens, like this painting of my grandmother bathed in his famous dappled light, and women in interiors. He also painted marvelous landscapes and florals without figures. Later he adopted a darker palette and a more intimate, introspective mood reminiscent of Rembrandt. His popularity faded as his former customers demanded what they had come to expect of him. Critics who dismissed his earlier work as shallow ignored his new efforts, which didn't fit into their pre-conceived notions of his talents. Only now are his later paintings beginning to receive the acclaim they so richly deserve.
